India's Solar Manufacturing Capacity Growth in 2024: 11.6 GW of Solar Cell Added

Apr 29, 2025

India added a significant 25.3 GW of solar module capacity and 11.6 GW of solar cell capacity in 2024, according to a recent report from Mercom India. This growth is driven by increasing demand for solar projects and the reintroduction of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) from April 2024, which included around 64.6 GW of module production capacity.

Gujarat emerged as a leader in photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing, hosting 42% of India's module capacity and over 37% of its annual solar cell production capacity. Other top states include Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, which accounted for 18% and 12%, respectively, of the nation's solar cell manufacturing. Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan also contribute significantly to solar module manufacturing.

In terms of imports, India brought in 65.9 GW of solar modules and cells in 2024, with cells making up 64% of the imports. Despite increased domestic production, India still faced a shortfall in meeting domestic demand, especially as Indian manufacturers seek to expand their exports to the US market, which has become a key destination for Indian solar products.
