IndiGrid Commissions India's First Regulated Utility-Scale Battery Storage System in Delhi

Apr 05, 2025

IndiGrid , India’s pioneering Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) in the power sector, has successfully commissioned the nation’s first regulated, utility-scale standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) — Kilokari BESS Private Limited (KBPL) — with a capacity of 20 MW / 40 MWh in Delhi.

The milestone project, awarded in October 2023 by BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), became commercially operational on April 1, 2025. Designed to bolster grid reliability and accelerate renewable energy adoption, the BESS facility is equipped to manage peak loads, support grid stability, and provide ancillary services.

This marks IndiGrid’s inaugural foray into commercial battery storage systems and reinforces its strategic vision to develop a resilient and sustainable power infrastructure. The project was commissioned on schedule and within budget, with support from BRPL, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), Ampere-hour Energy (AHE), and other key partners.

Harsh Shah, CEO and Whole-Time Director of IndiGrid, stated, “The successful commissioning of KBPL reflects our ongoing commitment to clean energy innovation. Battery storage is vital to ensuring grid efficiency and stability, particularly as India integrates more renewable sources.”

IndiGrid now manages a diversified portfolio of 41 power projects, including transmission lines, substations, solar energy assets, and a growing base of battery storage systems. The trust’s assets under management exceed Rs29,400 crore. Its investment manager is wholly owned by global investment firm KKR.

This landmark project not only underscores IndiGrid’s technical capabilities but also sets a precedent for regulated storage systems in India's evolving energy landscape.
