Jharkhand Paves the Way for Floating Solar Power with Koderma Project
Dec 30, 2024
By utilizing the existing reservoir at the thermal power plant, the project exemplifies resource optimization and showcases the potential of innovative renewable energy technologies. The 6 MW floating solar plant, currently under construction, is expected to be operational soon, generating significant interest and anticipation within the state.
Manoj Thakur, overseeing the project at the Koderma Thermal Power Station, emphasized the strategic decision to leverage the plant's reservoir for this innovative installation.
He highlighted that the plant already generates 10 MW of electricity through existing solar panels, and further initiatives are underway, including the development of a 155 MW floating solar plant at Tilaiya Dam by a specialized agency.
Prince Tiwari, the site inspection in-charge, explained the dual benefits of floating solar technology. "This approach not only harnesses the water reservoirs for renewable energy production but also helps maintain water quality," he stated. Addressing potential concerns about the project's impact on the local fishing community, Tiwari emphasized the potential for cage fishing within the reservoirs, suggesting that the project could even enhance their livelihood opportunities.
Upon completion, the Koderma project, along with other solar energy initiatives across the state, is projected to significantly increase Jharkhand's solar energy output, with an estimated 171 MW of electricity expected to be generated from various solar projects.
The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) have also joined forces to transform Tilaiya Dam into a "Green Valley," with renewable energy generation playing a central role in this ambitious initiative.
The floating solar project in Koderma and the broader push towards renewable energy across Jharkhand signify a promising shift towards sustainable development, offering cleaner energy options while effectively utilizing existing resources.
