Juniper Green Energy Brings India’s First Merchant BESS Online with 60 MWh Commissioning
Dec 25, 2025
Juniper Green Energy Ltd. has commissioned 60 MWh of its 100 MWh merchant Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Bikaner, Rajasthan, marking the commissioning of India’s first operational merchant energy storage facility.
The project has been developed through the company’s subsidiary, Juniper Green Cosmic Pvt. Ltd. Trial operations have been successfully completed, and the facility has received approval from the Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC). Commercial operations for the commissioned capacity began on December 24, 2025.
The remaining 40 MWh of capacity is expected to be brought online shortly. Upon full commissioning, the 100 MWh BESS will be among the largest operational battery energy storage systems in the country. The project is designed to unlock merchant revenue opportunities, including peak power arbitrage, grid balancing, and participation in ancillary service markets.
In a separate development, Juniper Green Energy has already installed an additional 400 MWh of BESS capacity at Fatehgarh, Rajasthan, which is targeted for commissioning by Q1 2026. This expansion is expected to significantly scale up the company’s energy storage portfolio and enhance long-term growth visibility.
Battery Energy Storage Systems are increasingly vital to India’s energy transition, supporting grid stability, facilitating higher renewable energy integration, managing peak demand, and improving the utilisation of transmission infrastructure. As part of its broader strategy, Juniper Green Energy plans to deploy BESS across its solar projects connected to the interstate transmission system (ISTS), creating an integrated renewable-plus-storage platform.
Commenting on the milestone, Ankush Malik, CEO of Juniper Green Energy, stated that the commissioning of the company’s first merchant BESS reflects its strong execution capabilities and strategic emphasis on energy storage as a value-accretive asset class that enhances grid reliability and portfolio diversification.
Juniper Green Energy continues to expand its renewable and energy storage footprint, supported by a strong development pipeline and proven execution capabilities.
