NTPC Advances Nuclear Expansion Plans with Russia’s Rosatom and France’s EDF
Jan 02, 2026
New Delhi: NTPC, India’s largest power producer, has entered into non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) with Russia’s Rosatom and France’s Électricité de France (EDF) to evaluate potential collaboration on large pressurised water reactor (PWR) nuclear power projects in India, according to people familiar with the discussions.
The engagements are expected to cover the entire project lifecycle, ranging from early-stage concept development and technology assessment to construction and commissioning. A key element of the discussions is a strong emphasis on indigenisation, aligning with India’s broader objective of developing domestic nuclear capabilities.
The move comes at a time when India is reworking its nuclear policy framework to enable greater private sector participation and ease long-standing supplier liability concerns. These issues had previously deterred foreign nuclear technology providers from entering the Indian market.
As part of its nuclear strategy, NTPC is actively evaluating reactor technologies offered by global suppliers, assessing technical specifications, cost structures, and localisation potential. The company is expected to play a central role in India’s long-term nuclear expansion plans.
The government has set a target of 30 GW of nuclear power capacity, with NTPC positioned as a key contributor to the broader 100 GW clean energy roadmap. Industry observers note that recent policy signals have renewed global interest in India’s nuclear sector, with several international players closely tracking regulatory developments.
The ongoing talks with Rosatom and EDF mark a significant step in NTPC’s efforts to diversify its generation mix and strengthen its position in baseload, low-carbon power, as India balances energy security with decarbonisation goals.
