NTPC Partners with EDF to Explore Nuclear Power Expansion in India

Apr 10, 2026

MoU outlines evaluation of advanced reactor technology for future projects. NTPC Limited has entered into a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Électricité de France to examine potential collaboration in developing new nuclear power projects in India. The agreement comes after securing necessary clearances from relevant ministries and government departments.

The partnership establishes a framework to jointly evaluate EDF’s European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) technology for deployment in India. The assessment will cover key aspects such as localisation opportunities, project feasibility, tariff structures, site selection, and workforce training, along with technical support—laying the groundwork for possible large-scale nuclear capacity addition.

Earlier this year, NTPC had also signed non-disclosure agreements with global nuclear players including Rosatom and EDF to explore cooperation on pressurised water reactor (PWR) projects. These developments reflect India’s broader push to diversify its nuclear partnerships and accelerate capacity expansion.

The move aligns with recent policy shifts by the Indian government aimed at opening up the nuclear sector to private participation and easing supplier liability norms—factors that had previously limited foreign involvement. Several international players, including Rosatom, Korea Electric Power Corporation, Westinghouse Electric Company, and EDF, have expressed interest in entering India’s nuclear energy space.

With its experience in executing large-scale power projects and its collaboration with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited, NTPC is positioning itself as a key player in the country’s nuclear ambitions. The company has set a target of achieving 30 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047 through its subsidiary, NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam, contributing significantly to India’s broader goal of 100 GW under the Viksit Bharat vision.

Currently, NTPC remains the only public sector enterprise, apart from NPCIL, actively involved in building nuclear power plants in the country, underscoring its strategic role in India’s clean energy transition.
