POWERGRID Seeks Bids for 100 MW / 200 MWh Battery Energy Storage Project in Punjab

Mar 09, 2026

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited has issued a tender inviting bids for the development of a 100 MW / 200 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the 220 kV Bhatinda substation in Punjab. The deadline for bid submission is March 23, 2026, and the bids will be opened on the same day.

The project is part of a larger tender announced in January 2026 aimed at deploying 250 MW / 500 MWh of standalone battery storage capacity. The initiative is intended to strengthen grid reliability and support the growing share of renewable energy in the country’s power system.

Under the tender scope, the selected bidder will be responsible for installing the battery energy storage system along with associated infrastructure. This includes the Power Conversion System (PCS), PCS transformers, medium-voltage (MV) bus works at the 33 kV level, and integration with the 33 kV electrical network developed by POWERGRID. In addition, the contractor must provide comprehensive operation and maintenance services for a period of 12 years.

The project is required to be commissioned within 15 months from the date of award, ensuring timely deployment of grid-scale energy storage in the region.

The tender allows participation through two qualification routes. Under the first route, bidders must demonstrate experience in supplying, installing, testing, and commissioning energy storage systems with a cumulative capacity of at least 10 MWh as a prime contractor. Alternatively, they may qualify if they have executed a solar or wind power project of at least 50 MW capacity in India, or have commissioned a minimum of two air-insulated switchgear circuit breakers in a substation or switchyard with voltage levels of at least 132 kV. These projects must have been completed within the last seven years and remain operational at the time of bid submission.

Under the second route, battery manufacturers are eligible if they have supplied at least 50 MWh of batteries for stationary grid applications within the three years preceding the bid submission deadline.

Financial eligibility criteria require bidders to maintain a positive net worth over the past three years and demonstrate an average annual turnover of at least Rs 2.36 billion (approximately $25.6 million) in the best three of the last five financial years.
