ProClime Partners with IPPAN to Bring Nepal’s 2000+ MW Hydropower to Global Carbon Markets

Feb 01, 2025

ProClime has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Independent Power Producers' Association, Nepal (IPPAN), positioning itself as the exclusive partner to help Nepal's renewable energy sector access international carbon markets. This partnership will enable Nepal’s 2000+ MW hydropower and associated renewable projects to be recognized under International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs) and other carbon instruments.

Under this MoU, ProClime will act as the single Carbon Portfolio Manager, facilitating the monetization of Nepal’s renewable energy assets by integrating them into global carbon credit mechanisms. This move is expected to provide a significant financial boost to Nepal’s renewable sector, ensuring that hydropower and associated renewables can generate additional revenue by trading in international carbon markets.

ProClime’s entry into Nepal’s market marks a pioneering step, making it the early mover and the largest player in the Hindukush range. The company’s expertise in carbon portfolio management will play a crucial role in structuring and certifying carbon credits for Nepal’s renewable projects, enhancing their value in the global sustainability ecosystem.

The collaboration is expected to benefit over 700 members of IPPAN, comprising independent power producers who have developed Nepal’s hydropower resources. By participating in international carbon trading, Nepal’s renewable sector will not only gain financial incentives but also contribute significantly to global decarbonization efforts.

This agreement aligns with Nepal’s ambition to strengthen its renewable energy landscape and leverage its vast hydropower resources to support sustainable economic development. Additionally, it reinforces the country’s commitment to global climate goals by facilitating the trade of certified green energy attributes on international platforms.

ProClime expressed gratitude to the Government of Nepal and IPPAN leadership for their support in making this initiative possible. The partnership marks a key milestone in integrating Nepal’s renewable energy sector into the global carbon economy, opening new opportunities for investment and sustainable growth.
