Jan 04, 2025

Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, recently visited the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Park in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, recognizing it as the largest floating solar park in India. With a projected total capacity of 600 MW, the project represents a significant advancement in India’s renewable energy goals.

During his visit, Minister Joshi expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Mohan Yadav for their strong backing of the nation’s renewable energy initiatives. He remarked that the Omkareshwar project illustrates India’s clean energy ambition and technological innovation.

In a post on social media platform X, he stated: “Visited the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project in Khandwa District, Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the largest floating solar projects in Asia with an impressive capacity of 600 MW. A big thank you to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Shri Mohan Yadav for their unwavering support in driving India's renewable future forward. This project showcases the scale and ambition of our nation's clean energy goals.”

Floating solar technology addresses land use challenges while enhancing performance due to the cooling effect of water on solar panels, leading to higher energy output. The current commissioned capacity of 278 MW marks a substantial step forward, with the project’s total estimated cost at ?330 crore, supported by Central Financial Assistance of Rs 49.85 crore.

Minister Joshi highlighted Madhya Pradesh’s significant strides in renewable energy, expanding capacity 14-fold from under 500 MW in 2012 to current levels. He praised the collaborative efforts of stakeholders including Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited, NHDC Ltd, AMP Energy Green Pvt. Ltd., and SJVN Ltd in achieving project milestones.

In his X post, he added: “Congratulations to all stakeholders, the Madhya Pradesh Government, and Solar Power Park Developers for the successful commissioning of a 278 MW solar park. Inaugurated last week by PM @narendramodi, this project reflects India’s unwavering commitment to sustainability goals.”

Once fully operational, the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Park will achieve its full 600 MW capacity, generating more than 4,600 million units of clean energy over 25 years, contributing significantly to India's energy security and sustainable development.
