World Bank Group and IESA Hold Workshop on Future Business Models for BESS in India
Dec 22, 2025
The World Bank Group, in collaboration with the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), organized a day-long workshop for utilities and government officials on “Future Business Models for BESS Implementation in India” on December 4, 2025, at The Imperial, New Delhi.
The advisory engagement was supported by funding from the European Union under the Accelerating Climate-Smart & Inclusive Infrastructure in South Asia (ACSIIS) program.
The workshop facilitated focused and in-depth discussions among key stakeholders on emerging business models for battery energy storage systems (BESS), while addressing critical challenges such as high upfront costs, regulatory uncertainties, and grid integration issues in India.
Discussions centered on identifying practical and commercially viable use cases for BESS, exploring multiple value streams, and assessing real-world applications within transmission and distribution networks. Participants also examined opportunities for monetizing excess power generation to enhance the financial viability of BESS projects.
In addition, the workshop covered operational aspects of BESS, including daily energy arbitrage, participation in ancillary services markets, and other use cases based on different project configurations. The deliberations aimed to support informed decision-making and accelerate the deployment of energy storage solutions in India’s evolving power sector.
